Brooklyn, our new home...
It's been a whirl-wind last month. Last month around this time, I found out that I had an interview with a charter school that is opening up in Brooklyn this summer. I went for the interview and was asked to stay for a second interview with the CEO and founder of the school. By the end of that hour and a half, I was contemplating a job offer for the school.
Today, I'm taking a break from my first three exciting weeks of planning and preparation for launching the new school, The Williamsburg Charter School, in Brooklyn (Greenpoint/Williamsburg area). For those of you in the NYC area, that would like to stop by and say hello and meet some of my new co-workers and friends, please sign-up for our fundraising/pre-launch event at The Galapagos Art Space this Thursday, July 22nd.
For those of you out of state who can't attend, but want to help support the school, you can send checks to the school directly at: The Williamsburg Charter School, 424 Leonard St. 4th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11222.
For those of you not familiar with New York City Public Schools, or New york Charter Schools, the gist of the story is we are a public school that receives some public funds for our school , however our Charter requires us to extend the educational opportunities for our students, hence we must fundraise to pay for those extra operational and instructional costs. So, anything helps. I know that most of you are not in the NYC area, so you may feel hesitant to help out a school far away, let me just say this, kids are kids and I'll know many of these kids personally and have a positive influence over their high school experience, so if you know me, trust me, we'll do our best.

MISSION STATEMENT
The object of a school is to carry the child as far as possible in its knowledge of the accumulated wisdom of the world.
W.E.B. Dubois
It is the mission of the Williamsburg Charter School to unite youth, families, staff, teachers, and the community at large to provide opportunities for young people to make sense of the world and prepare them to become workers in and citizens of the world community.
This will be accomplished through their participation in a rigorous and demanding liberal arts education that includes language, literature, writing, science, history, mathematics, the arts, technology and explorations in disciplines designed to teach fairness, justice, respect and compassion for themselves and others and the skills of critical thinking, communication and research.
"Educating young people to take their place in the world."
